December Update

Yeah, I know I didn't post the next day like a said I will but at least I didn't wait longer than a week right?

Anyway, I was going to give everyone up Dec update.

The first half of December was pretty uneventful or at least I don't remember much of it. A couple of weeks before Christmas, I had a car accident in PA. About 3K worth of repairs. So that was pretty much the low point of the month.

Spent Christmas in Jamaica with Su Chuen, really really fun. Recommend it to anyone who want to just relax by the beach and stuff.

Couple of days before New Years had a mini house party dinner with some of Chee Seng's finance's friends. Some of mine and Su Chuen. Cooked turkey again this year. I didn't find it as good as last years but can't complain for my 2nd attempt. Su Chuen made some appetizer which consist of baked wontan wrappers and seared tuna with wasabi cream. Must say it was pretty good.

NYE at friend house party. Nothing special here. Thats pretty much the highlights and lowlight of Dec. Probably missed a bunch of stuff but what can I do. Will write again soon. Will tell you about this book I am reading.

I am terribly sorry for the extremely late on my post. Perhaps I have lost several of my readers but I am sure the most enthusiastic of you are still around. At least this time I have a good reason for the late post, I was really busy. You all can understand the 'holiday' season. Details below.....

Well, let recap what happened since early November. Sometime in mid November I went fishing with several of my work colleagues. Being the fishing virgin that I was, it was a pretty nice experience. We went to this little town next to the Chesapeake bay called Reedville in VA. Arrived about 8 pm, had some beers....slept. The next day woke up about 5 am. Jump on to a boat and headed about 3 miles away from shore. Caught 2 rock fishes in the first hour. Wooohoo......then 1 more in the next 2-3 hours. Overall the boat got about 22 fishes or something like that. The first mate filleted the fish for us so it was really easy to bring them back.

Not much else happened February. Su Chuen was around for Thanksgiving and we went around town.

Anyway...thats all for now. My goal is to write about December tomorrow but we will see what happens. Enjoy the duo from Canada below.

I was thinking the other day and realized that the people in our (mine) generation has been through quite a bit of emotional changing periods in our lives.

End of the Friends series - I practically grew up watching this series. 10 years of my life and they end it just like that. I remember staying up late at night to watch this because the Malaysian Censorship Board thought it deserved a 18SX rating for some reason. I think I cried quietly that night when Chandler and Rachel got together finally.
and more recently, the end of another era......we say good bye to the Harry Potter series. I only really begun to appreciate the HP books in college even though they came out much earlier. Not going to say too much else since I might accidentally spoil it for someone.

Boy and Girls, I need some input. Please give me all the reason why you would go back to school vs why you would just continue working.

Here is my reason for going to school,

Probably more likely to actually leave work now. (Not so likely in the future)
College environment was fun. (Probably not a good reason)
Future benefits. (ie. Probably helpful when they looking for a regional manager or something.
Probably more time as well.

Here is my reason for staying at work,

Having a decent paycheck. (No need to say more)
I will be heading back to study for a calculated reasons rather than passion for books.
Immediate benefits (ie. Pay raises, promotions)
You already have job. (Never know what the job market will be like later).

Hey all,

Got back from Malaysia a couple of weeks ago. The trip was fun. Just a quick thank to the people who took time to meet up with me. I appreciate it. Now for a proper update, (or at least a funny story)

So....I was waiting for my flight from Dulles (<==Thats the closest airport to where I live) to JFK in New York. The people call us up and we boarded the plane. Everything normal so far......as we were heading to the runway a voice comes across the PA system "Ladies and Gentlemen, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but our main engine cannot turn on. We will be heading back to the jet way."

So I think to myself, no big deal. I have had this happen before. They go back fix it and then we leave. About 30 minutes at the jet way the voice comes on again "Ladies and Gentlemen, we can't figure out whats wrong with the engine. WE ARE GOING TO TURN IT OFF AND BACK ON TO SEE IF IT WORKS. JUST LIKE YOUR COMPUTER"

At this point I was thinking...."HELL NO!!!" Please please please tell me I didn't just heard him say "just like your computer" Cause my computer kind of reboots for no reason sometimes.

Anyway to make the rest of the story short, we switched planes and they lost our bags. But thats another story. Also to be nice, I am not going to tell you that it was Delta Airlines

I read blogging for dummies recently during a trip to the local barnes and nobles. Apparently there are 3 rules to blogging.

Rule number 1 - Update your blog regularly
Rule number 2 - Don't update your blog more than twice a day
Rule number 3 - Keep your blog focused

As you can tell, I have been pretty good at keep with rule number 2. I am still working on the other 2 rules. lol.

So....to 'improve' on the blog. I will try to update this blog at least 3 times a week beginning today. If I fail, please feel free to harass me in anyway you can. I prefer if you send it to any email address I don't read often but if you must give me a buzz. I will also try to keep focus for periods of time. So this will be the first of a three part mini-series focusing on the issue below.

Been away for a little while so I thought I would write something a little longer and perhaps a little more philosophical.

Ever wonder if the choices we made in life are 'correct'? What if instead of picking A, you did B? To be perfectly honest, I am at the point in my life where I am having a lot of doubts in my choices. I think its mostly because I know what choices I make now based on faith and hope. Call it a 'quarter life crisis' if you must.

On the other hand, I have always had to make life changing choices. Just that I have already made those choices long before I had to make them or there was always a 'easy' solution.

Science or arts............ think my parent somehow condition me to think that science was the right choice then. I don't regret it but don't think I really put much thought in that one. Probably the right choice anyway since I think I am pretty good at calculating and all that problem solving stuff.

Studying mechanical engineering........ the only reason I did this is because I knew I couldn't do Chemical Engineering and this was the next simplest to transfer my credits to. Probably a correct choice too since I graduated and feel a little bit smarter than I was 4 years ago.

Working for Micron........well, it was the only job offer I have at the time. Pay was decent, location was different from my college setting, gave me a chance to gain experience outside of Malaysia. Not much of a choice really. I won't say I regret this job since I am learning a lot however there is some doubts. I am not doing exactly what I like to do nor am I doing something I learned in the 20-odd years of schooling. When I was studying, I never thought I would be working in a clean room or anything like this. Still, probably the right thing to do in that situation.

My doubts about my choices these days are not only related to work and education. Things like staying here in the US versus going home. How long should I stay? How long is TOO LONG? When I go back how much will things change? Will my friends still be the same? Things will definitely change but to what degree? These are the things that cloud my mind when I have to stay up all night for my workday (or should I say work night).

Anyway.....enough about that. Back to reality. Just had to reformat my computer, lost all 7 GB of my music. sob...sob....sob..... the good part is, I finally got rid of all the songs I never liked but downloaded anyway.

I know I haven't been updating lately but I have a really a couple of really good excuses. Firstly, I have been busy. (You will probably understand from my update). Secondly, I have been a lazy ass and couldn't come up with some decent excuses. So there it is.

I have been doing great. Since the last update (1/12/2006 or in this country that needs to do everything backwards 12/1/2006), I have

Had an awesome Christmas dinner at my place. I made Roast Turkey with Herb Rub and Shittake Mushroom Gravy. Yes you read right. I MADE. The attendee were polite enough to say that it tasted good but I (and you for that matter) will never really know.
Switched back to night shift. This time its for four months. Some new schedule my department is testing out.
Had Su Chuen visit me here in Manassas. Too bad I was on night shift.
Welcomed 2007 with a blast in DC. Partied like it was 1990. hhehe
Visited Boston with Mr Seng Lee. Great city, wouldn't mind going there again.
Ice-skated a couple of times. Or should I say 'try' to ice-skate a couple of times

I have some news for you kids. I am not heading back for CNY. It is now confirmed. Malaysia Boleh?

Been reading Lim Kit Siang's blog this past couple of days and I must admit it is quite depressing especially after being away from home for the most part of the past four years. What makes me feel further apart from what is happening in Malaysia these days is that I feel like I am spending the 'prime' years of my life here rather than there.

While I was in Malaysia, I alway had the feeling that things aren't that bad and things will get better. I think being overseas made me realise just how bad is was and how bad is can get. Now I wonder if the level of corruption/discrimination/segregation in Malaysia is finally at the point where everything is going to come crashing down. I wonder if one day will all the disharmony and discontent bring Malaysia to the point of Civil War? I know it sound a little extreme but don't all civil war start off by just having some group of people having everything and some group just having to work harder just to get the same treatment? with some group having most and some group have less?

Maybe I am just being paranoid from all the Aliran, Lim Kit Siang, MalaysiaKini that I have read or maybe its time for us to do something about it. As my friends back home, I hope you guys can keep me abreast with the real situation.

Yippedee doda! wah wah wee wah! Finally got my working permit couple of days ago. I am not longer an illegal immigrant. Actually, I never was an illegal immigrant but it definately feels better now that I actually know that I get to be here is little while more.

I know I know, I have been raving about this song since March but its finally officially released. (big delay cause Eddie Murphy didn't want it out). Sharam finally got someone else to sing I guess. DJ Mag recently posted their top 100 DJ's for 2006 poll results. See http://www.djmag.com/top100results_2006 Mr PVD retained his crown for the second year. WHAT A BIG SURPRIZE. Cough cough.....I personally think he is way overrated. AVB is number 2. Wished he should have gotten top notch though, all around bangin dj.

Lots of great DJs on the top half of the list, a few I disagree with. Infested Mushroom is one of them. I don't think they deserved the 12th spot. (I guess all you goa-trance fans would disagree).

Some DJs I would have like to see higher up the chart. Steve Angello, Axwell and Lisa Lashes are all great producer/remixer and DJ.

Anyway, thats my two cents worth. Let me know what you guys thought about the poll. Cheers

Night shift is taking a toll in my life. Can't eat when I'm suppose to, get hungry when I am not suppose to, can sleep when I want to and can't stay up when I have to. Whoever said switching between nights on your workdays and day schedules during you off-day was easy is probably taking a couple years of his/her life. Sorry for the people that actually think its easy.

From what I am hearing, it is suppose to get easier but apparently I missed the lecture about how it get easier. I'm always TIREDDDddd.

People are always saying how they wish they could go back to school once they started working. I been working about two months and I have to say working is a lot like school. Made a mini list to prove it too.

School/Work always starts way too early for you.
You still have homework that you only start doing the day before you get back to work.
You still have to work 'extra' hours.
You still sleep way too much on your off-days and way too little on your 'work' days.
There will still be people in your group that are lazy and people whom just want to make you look bad.
You still eat instant noodles cause you are too lazy to make anything else.
You still learn stuff hoping that you might need it someday.
You still don't really really know what you are doing.
You still drink coffee to stay awake
You are stop being awake 5 minutes after classes start and wake up 5 minutes after it ends.

Thats all I could think of. I guess the biggest difference it that this time you get to do all those 'fun' stuff and get paid to do it. :)

Finally, 3 days of rest. arghhh....its been a long week. Actually just three working days but still long enough. I never realise how much dance music I have been listening to until today. I learn that when listening to the new 4 hour live Essential Mix from the global gathering in UK featuring Fatboy Slim, Deep Dish, Tiesto and Ferry Corsten today. I think you have listen to too much when you know the titles of 8 out of 10 song that are being played. Fatboy was great. Deep Dish was kicking, Tiesto who played after Deep Dish started pretty housey and got trancey. Ferry was his usual self. Anyway...forget it. Not important. I never meant to be political in my blog posting but I feel strongly that I should go on record and say that 'Israel reaction to the Lebanon issue is out of proportion' and the 'UPM bullying issue is a piece of bullsh*t'. The later issue has particularly hit me in the wrong spot. I am fine with all the 'undercounter' - behind the backboards - 'rules' that are somewhat on the borderline of being racial discrimiation but this is just too much. I don't have all the fact so if you know something I don't please do tell. Anyway, hope to hear more being done to both these issues.

World Cup Round Up: The final four

I must say it is quite interesting to see that the last four nations left in the World Cup are from Europe. The quarterfinals has been interesting and I believe the teams that played better in each match won. I am kind of sad that Argentina lost out to Germany but I don't think they made the right changes towards the end of the game. Considering overall performance, I don't think Italy or France should be in the final four but they did have impressive displays in the quarterfinals. My new pick for the world cup is Germany followed by Portugal but don't rely too much on me since the three teams I picked out (Argentina, Netherlands and Czechs) are all out of the competition.

The World Cup Round-Up: Round of 16 Survivors

The world cup is finally getting interesting. Here is the round-up.

Germany

They had a decent game with Sweden. I think the Swedish messed themselves up more than the Germans. Their next game might be the game of the world cup.

Argentina

Hard fought game with Mexico. Not the prettiest football but they got the job done in overtime. Would like to see them beat the Germans.

Italy

Another team that isn't playing great football. They seem to be getting better with Totti coming of the bench. I think Del Piero is definately more effective. Anyway...I see them getting pass Ukraine.

Ukraine

Probably the weakest team technically in the last eight. Don't seem to be able to score and they are depending too much on their all star striker.

England

Englands usual long balls and set pieces seem to be working so far. They might get into the semi cause of all the yellows from the Portugal game. I thought Ecuador should have made it though.

Portugal

In one Portugal - Netherlands game, I think I saw all the possible tactics for time-wasting, hurting opponent, unfriendly behaviour and unsportmenship I need for the whole tournement. Referee was kind of kayu. I think Portugal will have a tough time beating England without Deco and Costinha plus having half their team on yellow cards.

Brazil

A better performance than in their group. Should see them beating France.

France

Probably the luckiest team in this world cup. They should have been eliminated in the group stages and they were lucky to get by Spain. Let see if lady lucky still favors them in the quarterfinals.

The tune is tainted love. I got three versions of it below. The first is from the Pussy Cat Dolls. Its live from some event. Their song is kicked off by the leading singer of Soft Cell (see below). The second is from Marilyn Manson. Awesome video. Look out for the nerd to goth chick transformation, it show what a little make over can do. Also Twiggy on the decks. The last one is by Soft Cell. Old school synth stuff. Let me know which one you like the best. If you need to ask which one I like the best, you probably don't know me. By the way, this song probably has over a dozen other version but this is the only three I found on youtube.

The World Cup Round Up: Group Stages

Here is my 2-cent on what happened so far in the world cup and how things will pan out in the 2nd stage.

Group A

No surprise that Germany is having a good time in the group although I don't think they are playing as well as they can. Should get better since Ballack is back in the middle. Ecuador: I think they will give England a good showing in the next round. They held up quite well till they faced Germany.

Group B

One of the most boring groups. All the matches played in this group were boring to say the least. England without Owen and Rooney coming back from injury. I think they will have a tough time with Ecuador (see above too). I would have liked Sweden to be on top of this group but I think they will crash and burn against Germany next.

Group C

My fav team Argentina seems to be on a roll. The Saviola-Crespo combination is working out fine and the team is clicking. Look out for them. My prediction Argentina 3 - Mexico 0. Netherlands hasn't been playing to what I expected them to but I expected them to get by Portugal next.

Group D

Portugal got their job done in their group but I think they will head home after the game against Netherlands. Mexico doesn't have much change against Argentina as well. Nice to see that Iran has the same record as the 'great' USA in soccer. hahha

Group E

Probably the most interesting group with all the hype for the US team here. I am happy to say they lived up to my expectation of sucking. As usual all the commentary going on ESPN is about how the referees in the world cup are bad for sending their players off and giving the opponents penalties. All I have to say to the American are 'Can you try to lose gracefully for a change?' I am sad to see the Czechs leave. I would have prefers them to join Ghana in the next round but Italy will be fine. I am calling a Ghana upset over the samba boys. Any takers?

Group F

No surprise that Brazil breezed through their group. Their first two games were crap but their last game was quite interesting. I would have liked to see Japan in the next round but I guess we have to see the Aussie play one more game.

Group G

I think all the teams from this group doesn't deserve to be in the next round. All of them played poor football. I must say the teams in Group H will go through in the next match

Group H

Spain is doing well but they have bad luck in the World Cup so I have reserving further comments. Ukraine will probably beat the Swiss and have a nice showdown with the Italian.

Note to self: There are too many groups.
